Hello lovely readers. Today I am reviewing the new Tinted Botanical Facial Mineral Sunscreen from Australian Gold.
I prefer mineral-base sunscreens, but these often leave behind a white cast because they act as a physical barrier between your skin and UV rays. So when when noticed the new Tinted Botanical Facial Sunscreen from Australian Gold it while shopping for groceries, I grabbed a tube to give it a try.
Product description
This tinted mineral-based sunblock offers a SPF50 against both UVA and UVB rays and comes in a recycle, 3 fl oz tube. It is fragrance-free and non-pore clogging, making it an option for those with sensitive skin.
Formula
The formula is water resistant (up to 80 minutes), hypoallergenic, non-greasy, fast absorbing, and matte. It also features shea butter, vitamins and several antioxidant rich Australian botanicals, including Kakadu plum extract, Eucalyptus, and Red Algae. The formula is also eco-conscious, being free of paraben, oxybenzone, phthalate, PABA, petroleum, sulfate, dyes, and oil. Importantly, the product is not tested animals.
How to use
Per the company, the product should be applied liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating or immediately after towel drying, at least every 2 hours.
For my daily use, I use this product over my facial serum and moisturizer and under makeup.

Alumina, Butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, caprylyl glycol, cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, dimethicone crosspolymer, disodium EDTA, disteardimonium hectorite, Eucalyptus globulus leaf extract, glycerin, hexyl laurate, iron oxides, panthenol, PEG-10 dimethicone, phenoxyethanol, polyglyceryl-4 isostearate, polymethysilsesquioxane, Porphyra umbilicalis (red algae) extract, silica, squalane, stearic acid, Terminalia ferdinandiana (kakadu plum) fruit extract, tocopheryl acetate, triethoxycaprylysilane, and water.

Overall, I have mixed feelings about this product! I love the price point, the matte, powdery finish (similar to a makeup primer), and its eco-friendly and anti-animal testing stand. I also love that it reduces my makeup time in the mornings by blending easier than a non-tinted mineral-based sunscreen.
However, I wished it offered better sunscreen protection and that it excluded some of the chemical ingredients such as phenoxyethanol and dimethicone. The Environmental working Group gives this sunscreen a 6 out of 10 score (1 being best) and you can read more about the score here.
This product is readily available and retails between $9.97-$13.99 US.
I will probably finish this tube but I will not be repurchasing this product. Instead, I will continue to look for better rated tinted facial mineral-based sunscreens that are easily accessible at drugstores. ReplyDeleteI was actually looking at this product this morning because I need to find a new sunscreen for my husband. I'm glad you mentioned the chemical ingredients because I missed that part when reviewing the product.
ReplyDeletehey. Phenoxyethanol is a safe and effective preservative, aka the thing that prevents your creams from getting fungi and bacteria. And dimethicone is a silicone, it's hydrating, it doesn't clog your pores, it's not toxic, it's safe, it's responsible for that creamy slip. It's used in primers a lot. There's nothing wrong with either of these. Also, everything is a chemical. And synthetic or artificial as opposed to natural does not tell you anything about how safe or effective something is.

ReplyDeleteI have heard some good things about this brand but the sunscreen ingredients in this one aren't high enough, especially the Zinc Oxide. I look for a minimum of 11%. :)

ReplyDeleteI was curious how you could be disappointed with SPF 50, but upon further investigation, it looks like the coverage is actually less than what they report. Just feels really dishonest and a turn off for me about the brand to be honest.

ReplyDeleteWe still think Coppertone Ultra Guard Sunscreen Lotion SPF 70 is the .... than a high-end sunscreen you try to use sparingly because of cost or ... best sunscreen for backpacking

ReplyDeleteThank you for the review. What is your understanding of a "chemical" ingredient though? And why is that automatically bad? I would say that everything is a chemical. And whether it is good or bad should be judged on an individual basis. Phenoxyethanol is a preservative and it's safe. Companies have to use some kind of preservative, else the product will develop fungus or bacteria and we don't want that. Phenoxyethanol is used at max 1%, it's effective and safe. Parabens were the norm in the past, they were even more effective and safe, but companies have discontinued using them because of their undeserved bad reputation. While dimethicone is one of many silicones, it's also absolutely safe and it's responsible for that silky slip. It's an emollient, so it hydrates. Employed heavily in primers too. There's nothing bad about it and it's down to personal preference about texture and application. It being a chemical (like everything on the planet), or even a synthetic chemical, if that's the issue, has nothing to do with whether you'd want it in your products or not.

ReplyDeleteA lot of our ranch soil is tapped out of minerals, and that's only the tip of the iceberg and more food is being developed with aqua-farming, which means they are supported with prepared water, no sun and no minerals.
