Mainstream Swatch and Review - Part I of the Pretty Vintage Collection Collaboration by SinfulColors and Kandee Johnson

Nothing to Disclose

Hello lovely readers! Today on the blog I have my swatches and review of the new Pretty Vintage collection from the Kandee Johnson and SinfulColors collaboration.

Mainstream Swatch and Review - Pretty Vintage Collection Collaboration by SinfulColors and Kandee Johnson

The dessert-inspired collection features a total of 12 polishes: 8 matted polishes, 3 textured polishes, and 1 glitter topper. The polishes have a dark gray cap and are either labeled as Vintage Matte or Sugar.

I was able to find 10 out of 12 polishes and will review the first 5 in this post. Three of the 5 polishes featured today are only available at Meijer.

Cherry on Top
This is a matte, bright cherry red polish with gold. The shimmer does not translate on the nail, but the polish is still gorgeous, nonetheless. The formula is great and self-levels nicely with the very first coat. I used 2 coats for opacity, but you may only need one coat if you have shorter nails and apply carefully. Shown below are 2 coats.

Licorice
This is a matte, blacken base polish loaded with gold shimmer. The shimmer in the polish gives it a dark olive shade. This too have a fantastic formula and can be worn as a one "coater" if applied generously. Shown below are 2 coats.

Whipped Frosting
This is an off white, matte polish with gold shimmer. Sadly, the shimmer fails to show up on the nail. Also, the formula and application are not as smooth as with the darker matte polishes. For this and the rest of the lighter shades in the collection, it may take 2 generous coats for the polishes to self-level (I'll come back to the formula at the end of my post). Shown below are 2 coats.

Peaches N' Cream
This is a bleached neon-like matte polish in a peachy shade with pink undertones. Again, it also features gold shimmer but the shimmer is not visible on the nail. This lighter shades takes at least 2 coats to self-level. Show below are 2 coats.

Mint Chip
This is another bleached neon-like matte polish in a beautiful mint shade. And I'll sound like a broken record, but again, the gold shimmer does not show up on the nail and it takes at least 2 coats to self-level. Shown are 2 coats plus top coat.

Overall thoughts
In my experience, matte polishes can be difficult to apply. The formula tends to dry fast, it's generally streaky, and the polish dents easily as it is meant to be worn without a top coat. The lighter shades in this collection are no exception to this, but despite this, I think they feature some of my favorite matte formulas to date for the price point.

When wearing, I first applied a thin layer and then a (cuticle flooding) generous second coat to make sure I had a smooth coverage. Yes, I had to do some cleaning, but I didn't have to overwork the polish.

Cherry on Top and Licorice, however, have great formula regardless of finish and are my top favorites. And Mint Chip is the perfect mint shade, in my opinion.

Overall, the colors are gorgeous and pastel lovers will be very pleased. They are also perfect for Valentine so the release timing of the collection is great.

These polishes retail for $1.99 US and are available at drug stores and retailers nationwide including Walgreens, Bartell Drugs, and Fred Meyer. Cherry on Top, Peaches N' Cream, and Licorice are only available at Meijer.

I will have 5 more polishes from the collection reviewed here next week. In the meantime, here is a chance to win Cherry on Top, Peaches N' Cream, and Licorice.

  1. I find that most matte polishes don't show their shimmer but then top coat makes it pop. I love peaches and creme though. That's a unique matte color.
